With 2017 coming to a close, now is the perfect time to move from TFS to VSTS. Visual Studio Team Services is everything you know and love about Team Foundation Server, with none of the maintenance. VSTS updates every three weeks automatically, ensuring that you always have access to the latest features and fixes. Here, we’ll give you an introduction to the methods you can use to begin your migration from TFS to VSTS.
Manual Migration
The most basic method of migration is to simply manually move your most important assets. With this method, you will need to undergo a fair bit of planning. You’ll need to identify which assets you want to migrate, when you want to migrate them, and set up your account in VSTS with the correct users, projects, and other items. Because you’ll be starting fairly fresh, this is considered to be one of the easier migration options.
TFS Database Import Service
If you have TFS 2017 Update 3 or newer, you can use the TFS Database Import Service. This service breaks down your migration from TFS to VST S into six phases, making it easy to follow. The phases include getting started, prerequisites, and validation. There is also a downloadable migration guide to help walk you through this process. Because this service functions at a database level, it provides a very high fidelity migration and is strongly recommended.
PRAKTIK’s TFS Migration Service
Even with all the tooling and guides available, migration can be a confusing process. Why not let PRAKTIK handle it for you?
