We all wish security tooling was simple. Unfortunately, achieving consistent, meaningful coverage across a growing codebase is rarely effortless. The latest updates to GitHub Advanced Security for Azure DevOps signal a shift toward addressing two persistent challenges in DevSecOps: implementation overhead and maintaining clear visibility.
Security by Default
One of the most notable updates is the introduction of one-click security scanning powered by CodeQL. Historically, enabling code scanning required configuring pipelines, maintaining YAML files, and replicating that setup across repositories. While effective, this approach created friction. It was also a major adoption pain point for organizations managing large, distributed codebases.

With this update to Advanced Security, scanning can be enabled at the repository, project, and organizational level with a single click. There’s no need for custom pipeline configuration or ongoing maintenance. Code scanning becomes embedded into the development environment by default, rather than something teams must continuously reimplement. This reduces operational burden while increasing security coverage across the organization.
Alerts and Actionable Insight
Equally important is how vulnerabilities are surfaced and managed. Instead of reviewing alerts in isolation at the repository level, teams now have access to a centralized, organization-wide view with the Security Overview alerts tab. This consolidated perspective makes it easier to filter, prioritize, and assess risk across the entire codebase.
Building on this visibility, the introduction of security campaigns enables teams to group vulnerabilities by shared characteristics such as severity, type, or specific CVEs. They can then track remediation efforts more effectively. These campaigns dynamically update as teams identify new issues, transforming what was once a static backlog into a continuous, coordinated workflow.

Individually, these enhancements may seem small. Together, they represent an approach to application security that emphasizes consistency, visibility, and sustained action. For more information or to get started, contact our team of experts here at PRAKTIK.
